New Year, New You? Is it Time to Take Control of Your Career?

As we enter the new year we tend to think about the past and look to make positive lifestyle changes for the future.
Many of us think about our career and quite rightly too. Work takes up a huge chunk of our lives, potentially we work for 40+ years, 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, so we really should make sure we enjoy what we do.
Are you due a change?
The points below are signs that a change could be on the cards.
Getting out of bed in the morning to get to the office for 9 is becoming harder than ever, and Sunday night makes you feel a bit sick. Dreading going in every day is a sure-fire sign that it is time for a change.
You are completely drained when you get home and exhausted all the time. Your job should be challenging and I am certain we all have days when all we want to do after work is put our onesies on and crawl under the duvet. However if this is happening more often than you’d like and if it is preventing you from enjoying other things in life then you should consider a change.
Your role has grown, you have been given more responsibilities, but your salary hasn’t changed - I am guessing you may be feeling a tad unappreciated? We all need to feel seen, valued and heard and if your current employer isn’t giving you this maybe it is time to find someone that will.
It's all about the money - you might get paid handsomely but you’re still unhappy in your role. We all need a purpose in life, find something that can give you yours.
You’ve lost your mojo, your job just doesn’t excite you anymore. We all have bad days but if you are feeling apathy on a regular basis then let’s face it, it’s probably time to move on.
The thought of going into the office makes you want to cry and more often than not you do! This is not healthy and could lead to stress-related conditions; find something that makes you smile.
You’ve hit a wall. You’ve achieved all you can, you’re at the top of your pay scale and there is little chance of a promotion. I am sure that if you truly enjoy your role you can put up with this, but ask yourself for how long? When will you start feeling frustrated, resentful or any of the feelings listed above.
If you see yourself in any of the above - what can you do?
Reflect on your current situation. What aspect of the role do you dislike? Is it the role, the company, the management, your colleagues? Can you move within the organisation? Can you move into a similar role but for a different company? Do you feel you need to try something new that is more aligned to your skill-set, personality, attributes and strengths? Figuring this out will enable you to make appropriate decisions.
Define your personal brand - this means taking a deep and critical look at yourself, your skills, strengths, values and accomplishments. Critiquing yourself improves your self-awareness. Knowing who you are, where you thrive and what makes you tick is one of our greatest tools in life and will help you make better, more informed decisions.
Work out where you are heading by matching your values and strengths to a role, company or sector. To be passionate and enthusiastic about a job, you have to, at the very least, enjoy aspects of it. That might be the role itself but it could also be because of the services offered, the rewards gained or the people you work with. However, you need to be realistic. If you have worked in customer services all your life it is unlikely that you can become a broadcast journalist overnight. To succeed in any interview you need to be a good fit for the recruiting organisation, that means your skills and strengths need to meet their preferences. Apply for roles that will allow this, and could present better opportunities than your current role (by this stage you should have established the source of your unhappiness and know what you need to address). If you are looking to make a complete change then this will take time and energy. You will need to research the market you want to enter, network where possible and potentially up-skill.
Update your LinkedIn account so it reflects your brand, your achievements, abilities and transferable skills.
Grow your network through social media and good old fashioned conversations. If you are able to, let people know you are in the market for a change then tell them! When doing so, make sure you are selling your best qualities.
Lose the baggage - we are often our worst enemy. Making a move into new territories can be daunting and often we make excuses and find reasons not to try something new. Have faith in yourself and your abilities and strive to achieve your goals.
